“So-Tu” / CHICKEN TENT/EGG BASKET WITH SLIDING DOOR

[1,2,7]: CHICKEN TENT/EGG BASKET WITH SLIDING DOOR

[3,4]: Scanned museum papers depicting Liberian basketry skills and an illustration of a similar chicken tent, from @archiveliberia’s vast archive

[5]: Liberian micro-entrepreneur Mamie Peters, holding one of her hens and smiling at the camera while seated in one of her henhouses

[6]: Similar chicken egg basket with sliding door open holding 8 visible eggs. This one is of a different design and construction method. Rather than woven basketry this chicken tent is made by binding small columns of reed to form the conical structure. We may explore this further in a future post…

Observations: design by responding to nature/natural systems (bird’s nests and their construction, and function)/biomimicry, transforming material for both utility and form, material awareness, material intelligence.
